Cyclica is a Toronto-based, venture-backed biotechnology company that has recently been named by Deep Knowledge Analytics as one of the top 20 AI in Pharma companies globally. Cyclica provides its web-based drug discovery platform to world-class pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and academic partners to enable the development of safer and more effective medicines. For more information, see cyclicarx.com.
Role and Responsibilities
The intern will work within Cyclica’s team of software developers and data scientists to refine the core predictive model used for proteome screening and drug design projects. They will become familiar with the MatchMaker codebase and the procedures of data gathering, filtering, and model training. They will keep detailed notes and document their work, using the company’s source code control system (git/gitlab). If applicable, they will aid in the preparation of a manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. The intern will have the opportunity to work with Cyclica’s in-house expert data scientists and gain experience working on real-world problems that will make a direct impact and immediate impact on global pharmaceutical R&D.
Cyclica has recently developed MatchMaker, a technology based on deep learning that reliably predicts binding between small molecules and human proteins (link). MatchMaker is trained using a combination of structural data and drug-protein interaction data from public databases and has proven to be much more accurate than conventional molecular docking approaches, rivaling high-throughput experimental techniques. The successful applicant will explore new methods to leverage mixed confidence training data to improve model generalizability.
